Gabala is one of Azerbaijan's most family-friendly destinations, with mountain activities, nature parks, and resort amenities designed for children. Getting your family from the airport to your hotel is the one piece that requires a bit of planning.
Getting the right vehicle
Families with children need more space — strollers, car seats, extra bags, snacks, all the things. A standard sedan may work for a couple with one small child, but for larger families or anyone with bulky equipment, request a minivan or SUV when booking your transfer.
Gabala's resorts often send larger vehicles for families if you let them know in advance. When arranging your hotel shuttle, mention the number of children and any special needs.
Child seats
Child car seats are not routinely available in Azerbaijani vehicles. This applies everywhere in the country, but it is especially true in smaller cities like Gabala where transport services are less formal.
Your options: bring a portable travel car seat with you (the lightweight, foldable kind), or request one from your transfer provider at least several days before your trip. Even with a request, follow up to confirm. If the seat does not materialize, you will need to manage without one for the short 15-20 minute ride — not ideal, but the road is well-maintained and traffic is minimal.
At the airport with kids
GBB is a small, quiet terminal. There are no play areas, no family rooms, and limited food options. If your flight is on time, you will spend very little time here — collect bags and head to your waiting vehicle. If there is a delay, bring activities and snacks for the children. The terminal is clean and safe, just basic.
The ride to your hotel
The drive from GBB to most Gabala hotels is 15-25 minutes through pleasant countryside. The road passes through forested areas with mountain views — kids who are old enough to look out the window will enjoy it. In winter, there may be snow on the ground, which adds to the scenery but also means ensuring your vehicle has appropriate tires.
What to bring
Gabala has shops and small supermarkets, but selection is limited compared to Baku. If your children have specific dietary needs, favorite snacks, or require particular supplies, bring them from Baku or from home. Resort shops tend to carry basics at premium prices.
Overall
Gabala is genuinely good for families. The transfer from the airport is short and easy once you have it arranged. The key is booking the right vehicle size and handling the child seat question before you arrive — everything else falls into place.
