Arriving at Lungi Airport Late at Night

Last updated: March 2026

Late-night arrivals at Lungi Airport face a genuine logistical challenge. The estuary crossing to Freetown becomes significantly more difficult — and potentially dangerous — after dark.

The core problem

The government ferry does not run at night. The last scheduled departure is typically in the late afternoon or early evening. Independent speedboats after dark are risky: poor lighting, no navigation aids, and the potential for overloading.

This is not a situation where you simply pay a bit more for a late-night taxi. The water is real, the conditions can be rough, and the stakes are higher than at most airports.

Your options after dark

| Option | Viable? | Risk level | Notes | |--------|---------|-----------|-------| | Pre-booked transfer | Yes | Managed | Provider arranges a reliable night crossing | | Independent speedboat | Risky | High | Not recommended without trusted contact | | Government ferry | No | N/A | Not running at night | | Stay near airport | Yes | Low | Basic hotels in Lungi town | | Road route overnight | Possible | Moderate | 4–6 hours on dark roads |

Pre-booked night transfer

A reputable transfer provider will have a vetted boat operator for night crossings. They assess weather conditions and will reroute you (road or overnight stay) if the crossing is unsafe. The boat will have proper lighting and life jackets. This is the only recommended way to cross the estuary at night.

Expect to pay the same rate as daytime: SLE 500–900 (EUR 25–45). Some providers may charge a small night supplement.

Staying overnight near Lungi

If your flight lands very late and conditions are not suitable for crossing, spending the night near the airport is a sensible backup. There are basic guesthouses and hotels in Lungi town, a short taxi ride from the airport. Rates range from SLE 200–500 (EUR 10–25) per night.

Cross to Freetown in the morning when the ferry is running and conditions are visible. This is the safest option for very late arrivals without a pre-arranged transfer.

The airport at night

Lungi Airport is not designed for overnight stays. The terminal is basic, with no sleeping facilities, limited seating, and no food available after the last flights. If you need to wait, the terminal is safe but uncomfortable.

Flights that commonly arrive late

International flights from Brussels (Brussels Airlines), Casablanca (Royal Air Maroc), and regional West African routes sometimes land in the evening hours. If you know your flight arrives after 18:00, arrange your transfer before you fly. Do not arrive at Lungi at night without a plan.
