What affects the price
Distance is the primary factor. Doha is compact enough that most hotels are within a 15-25 km radius of the airport. Lusail, which is further north, costs more.
Traffic has a modest impact. Doha rush hours (7-9 AM, 4-7 PM) can slow taxi meters down and increase Uber pricing. Outside those windows, the roads are free-flowing.
Time of day affects Uber/Careem pricing slightly due to supply changes. Taxis are metered so the fare is consistent. Transfers have fixed pricing.
Vehicle class creates the biggest price difference for transfers. A standard sedan at 30-50 USD versus a luxury vehicle at 70-120 USD serves the same route but at very different price points.
The value perspective
The metro is extraordinary value. A trip that costs 50+ QAR by taxi costs 2 QAR by metro. The trade-off is convenience: the metro does not go to your hotel door, it does not run after 11 PM, and managing luggage on the train requires effort.
For solo travelers during metro hours, the metro is the obvious choice. For couples, a taxi at 40-70 QAR is affordable and convenient. For families, a transfer at 30-60 USD provides appropriate space, child seats, and door-to-door service.
Currency and payment
Qatari riyals (QAR) are needed for cash transactions. ATMs in the terminal are plentiful. Taxis accept cards. Uber/Careem process payment electronically. Transfers are typically prepaid.
