DMM - Dammam

Getting from King Fahd Airport to your hotel with kids

Last updated: February 2026

King Fahd Airport is spacious, modern, and well-maintained. The airport itself is not the challenge. The distance to the city and the potential heat are what families need to plan for.

Inside the airport

The terminal is large and air-conditioned. Passport control is generally efficient. Baggage claim areas are clearly signed. There are toilets and basic facilities throughout.

The arrivals hall has limited options for children. There is no play area. A small shop may sell snacks and drinks. Bring entertainment and food for children in your carry-on.

The heat factor

This is the most important consideration for families, especially those arriving between May and October. Outside temperatures regularly exceed 45 degrees Celsius. The walk from the terminal to any vehicle, even a short one, exposes your family to intense heat.

Have your transport arranged so you can go directly from the air-conditioned terminal into an air-conditioned vehicle with minimal waiting outside. This is a practical reason to choose a pre-booked transfer over waiting at the taxi rank.

Carry water for everyone. Keep children hydrated from the moment you land.

Child seats

Child seats are not standard in Saudi taxis or ride-hailing vehicles. This is consistent across the country.

If you need a child seat, request one when booking a private transfer. Specify your child's age and weight to ensure the correct seat type. Not all transfer companies stock child seats, so confirm availability explicitly.

Alternatively, bring your own travel car seat. This is the most reliable option, especially for infants.

The drive

The good news for families: the road from DMM to Dammam and Khobar is flat, smooth highway. No winding mountain roads, no rough terrain. Children who are prone to car sickness should have no issues.

The journey takes 30-45 minutes to Dammam and 35-50 minutes to Khobar in normal conditions. Rush hour traffic in the city areas can add time but the highway portion is consistent.

Vehicle considerations

A standard sedan works for a family of three or four with moderate luggage. If you have more than two large suitcases plus strollers and car seats, request a minivan or SUV when booking.

Taxis at DMM are a mix of sedans and SUVs. You cannot choose what arrives at the rank. If you need specific vehicle space, a pre-booked transfer is the only way to guarantee it.

Practical tips for families

  • Summer arrivals: Dress children in light, breathable clothing. The temperature shock from the aircraft to the outdoor air is significant.
  • Hydration: Start hydrating on the plane. The dry desert air and heat combine to dehydrate quickly.
  • Timing: If possible, book flights arriving in the evening or early morning when temperatures are lower.
  • Snacks: The terminal food options are limited. Pack sufficient snacks for the airport and the car ride.
  • Sunscreen and hats: Even for the short outdoor exposure between terminal and vehicle, sun protection matters during summer days.

The recommendation

For families with young children, particularly during summer, a pre-booked transfer with a suitable vehicle and child seat is the most sensible option. The distance is too far, the heat too intense, and the alternatives too uncertain to leave to chance.
