Getting from Curacao Airport with Kids – Family Guide

Last updated: March 2026

Curacao Hato International Airport is small and easy to navigate, which is good news for families. The building is compact, distances are short, and you will not be dragging children through endless corridors. Here is what to expect.

Inside the terminal

After immigration and baggage claim, the walk to the exit is brief and entirely on one level — no escalators or stairs to negotiate with a stroller. Free luggage trolleys are available in the baggage hall.

There are basic restroom facilities in the arrivals area but no dedicated baby changing rooms. The departures level has slightly better facilities, but you will likely want to get moving rather than linger.

The terminal is air-conditioned, which helps since stepping outside into the Caribbean heat with tired children is the main challenge. Have water ready.

Car seats and child safety

This is the key issue for families. Airport taxis in Curacao do not carry child seats. If your children need a car seat or booster, you have two options:

  • Bring your own — this is the most reliable approach, especially for infants and toddlers
  • Book a private transfer with a child seat — request it at the time of booking and confirm the day before
Curacao's car seat enforcement is lenient, but safety should not depend on local enforcement. For children under 4 or under 18 kg, a proper car seat is strongly recommended.

Best transport options for families

| Family Size | Recommended Option | Why | |-------------|-------------------|-----| | 2 adults + 1 child | Taxi (if you have your own seat) | Quick and affordable | | 2 adults + 1–2 kids | Private transfer with car seats | Car seats arranged for you | | 2 adults + 3+ kids | Pre-booked minivan transfer | Space for everyone and all gear | | Extended family / 5+ people | Minivan transfer | One vehicle, fixed price |

Luggage and equipment

Families with strollers, pack-n-plays, beach toys, and multiple suitcases will find that a standard sedan taxi gets tight quickly. If your luggage includes more than 2 large suitcases plus a stroller, consider booking a minivan.

A minivan transfer from CUR to Willemstad runs about EUR 38–48 — not much more than a sedan taxi but far more comfortable when traveling with children and gear.

The ride to your hotel

The drive from the airport to most Willemstad hotels and resorts takes 15–25 minutes on well-maintained roads. There are no rough patches or mountain roads to worry about — Curacao is flat. Most children handle the ride well, even after a long flight.

For families heading to Jan Thiel or the southeastern beaches, the ride is about 20–30 minutes. Westpunt, on the island's western tip, takes closer to 45 minutes.

Tips for a smooth arrival

  • Book transport in advance if you need child seats — this cannot be arranged at the taxi stand
  • Bring snacks and water through to arrivals — immigration queues can be slow
  • Have your accommodation address ready on your phone to show the driver
  • Apply sunscreen before exiting the terminal if it is daytime — the sun is strong and immediate
