Nashville Airport with Kids — Getting Downtown as a Family

Last updated: March 2026

Nashville is increasingly popular for family trips — the music scene, the food, and the friendly atmosphere. Getting from the airport to your hotel with children takes a bit of planning, mainly because of the car seat situation.

Tennessee car seat laws

Tennessee law requires:

  • Children under 1 year or under 20 lbs: rear-facing car seat
  • Children 1-3 years: rear-facing until limits are exceeded, then forward-facing
  • Children 4-8 years: forward-facing seat or booster
  • Children 9+ years: seat belt
These rules apply to all vehicles, including taxis and rideshares. However, neither Uber, Lyft, nor Nashville taxis provide child car seats.

Your options for child seats

| Option | Child seat available? | Notes | |--------|----------------------|-------| | Uber/Lyft | No | You must bring your own | | Taxi | No | Same rule applies | | Private transfer | Yes, on request | Specify age and weight when booking | | Rental car | From rental company, extra fee | Usually USD 10-15/day |

If you need a car seat and do not want to carry one through the airport, a pre-booked transfer is your best option. Request the seat type when you book, and it will be installed in the vehicle when your driver arrives.

Best transport for families

| Scenario | Recommended | Price | |----------|-------------|-------| | 2 adults + 1 child, light bags | UberXL + own car seat | USD 25-40 (EUR 23-36) | | 2 adults + 2 kids + luggage | Private transfer (SUV) | USD 65-90 (EUR 59-82) | | Large family / lots of gear | Private minivan transfer | USD 75-100 (EUR 68-91) | | Budget, older kids (9+) | Standard Uber/Lyft | USD 15-25 (EUR 14-23) |

The rideshare pickup challenge

The Uber/Lyft pickup zone at BNA is in the parking garage on the first floor, across a pedestrian bridge from the terminal. With a stroller, multiple bags, and tired children, this walk is manageable but not ideal. It takes about 5 minutes and involves an elevator or escalator.

Taxis are picked up at the curb directly outside the terminal — a much easier option with kids.

Private transfers can meet you inside the arrivals hall, which is the easiest scenario for families.

Tips for families at BNA

  • Request a car seat before you book. Do not assume any transport option will have one.
  • Use the elevator to get to the ground transportation level. It is next to the escalators and clearly signed.
  • Eat at the airport if kids are hungry. BNA has a good food court with family-friendly options. Once you are in the car, downtown is only 15-20 minutes away.
  • Bring entertainment for the wait. During surge periods, rideshare waits can stretch to 10-15 minutes in the garage.
  • Consider a taxi if Uber surges. The taxi stand is easier to reach with kids and the price is predictable.
