Grantley Adams Airport sits at the southern tip of Barbados, about 15 km from Bridgetown. Because the island is small, all destinations are within 75 minutes of the airport. However, west coast resorts are a genuine distance away, and costs reflect that.
Government-set taxi fares
Barbados taxis do not use meters. Fares are regulated by the government, and Grantley Adams publishes an official rate for each destination. The system at the airport is straightforward: tell the Taxi Dispatcher outside the Arrivals Hall where you are going, and they will tell you the fare, issue you a trip form, and point you to an available car. Authorised taxis carry a yellow "Authorised Taxi" sticker on the side panel — there are around 280 of them. If you have excess luggage and need a van, the rate is 1½ times the normal rate.
The current rate list is published by the airport itself, on the Taxi Rates from the Airport page of gaia.bb and on the tariff displayed at the airport. That is the figure to go by. If anything is unclear, the Airport Traffic Supervisor advises on the tariff, and the Airport Duty Manager can be reached on 1-246-420-2900. It is against the law for a driver to charge more than the prescribed fare.
So the honest answer to "what does it cost" is: whatever the dispatcher quotes you, and you will know before you get in the car. That is a better guarantee than any figure on a travel site, and it is why we do not print the individual fares here — the list is revised from time to time and a stale number is worse than no number.

Private transfers are broadly comparable to the official taxi fares, and the price is fixed when you book rather than quoted at the kerb. What you get for the difference is meet-and-greet, a guaranteed vehicle type (sedan, minivan or SUV), and the option to pay by card. Currency note
The Barbados Dollar is pegged to the US Dollar at a fixed rate: BBD 2 = USD 1. The airport quotes taxi fares in Barbados Dollars but you may pay in US Dollars at that 2:1 rate if you prefer. Both currencies are accepted across the island, and you will often receive change in a mix of both. There is no advantage to exchanging money. ATMs dispense BBD.
Surcharges
If you have excess luggage and need a van or other larger vehicle, the airport applies 1½ times the normal rate — this one is published by the airport itself. Any other surcharge should come from the dispatcher's quote, not appear at the end of the ride. Confirm with the dispatcher or your transfer provider before setting off.
When a private transfer from BGI is the right choice
- Three or more people: a 4-seat car to Bridgetown City Center is from €224, about €56 per person, usually level with or below separate public-transport tickets once you count the walk, the wait and the last mile with bags.
- Going to a specific address rather than the main station: the car goes to the door, so the public-transport fare is not the whole cost of the trip.
- Arriving tired or late: the driver waits at arrivals with your name, included for 60 minutes after landing.
