ASE - Aspen

Arriving late at Aspen-Pitkin County Airport

ASE does not typically handle flights late at night — the airport has operational restrictions tied to its mountain location, and most commercial flights are scheduled during daylight hours. But winter weather has its own schedule, and delayed flights can push arrivals well into the evening.

Why late arrivals happen

The issue at Aspen is not scheduling — it is weather. Low cloud ceilings, snow, wind, and poor visibility regularly delay flights. A flight scheduled to land at 3 PM might not arrive until 7 or 8 PM. In some cases, flights circle and eventually land after multiple attempts. This is a known reality of flying into Aspen in winter, and regular visitors plan for it.

Transport after dark

RFTA bus: The free airport bus typically runs until about 11 PM, but check the current schedule for your travel dates. During ski season, evening service is usually available.

Taxis: Some taxis remain at the airport for delayed evening flights, but availability is not guaranteed. If multiple flights are delayed to the same evening window, demand will exceed supply.

Rideshare: Uber and Lyft availability drops in the evening. On a busy ski weekend night, surge pricing can be steep.

Pre-booked transfer: This is the most reliable option for delayed arrivals. A good transfer service monitors your flight status and adjusts the driver's pickup time accordingly. You land, your driver is there, and you are at your hotel in 15 minutes. During peak weeks when everything is stretched thin, this reliability is worth the cost.

The diversion scenario

Sometimes flights to ASE cannot land at all and divert to Eagle County Airport (EGE), roughly 70 miles east. This can happen in the evening after multiple landing attempts. If you are diverted, the airline may or may not provide ground transport to Aspen. Some private transfer services offer diversion coverage — the driver goes to whichever airport you end up at. Ask about this when booking.

Evening conditions in Aspen

Aspen in winter gets dark early (around 5 PM) and cold (often well below freezing by evening). If you are standing at the curb waiting for a ride, dress warmly. The airport terminal is heated, but once you step outside, mountain winter is immediate.

Practical advice

  • Pre-book your transfer, especially during peak season
  • Choose a service that tracks flight delays and diversions
  • Keep your phone charged — you may need to coordinate with your driver
  • Dress warmly for the possibility of waiting outside
  • Do not count on rideshare for delayed evening arrivals during peak weeks
  • Let your hotel know about potential delays so they hold your reservation and any dinner plans
