Arriving at Addis Ababa Bole Airport late at night

Last updated: March 2026

Bole Airport is one of the busiest overnight airports in Africa. Ethiopian Airlines operates its main hub here, and a large wave of connecting flights departs between midnight and 5 AM. This means the airport never truly sleeps — the terminal is active, staffed, and functional around the clock.

What to expect after midnight

The terminal remains fully lit and operational. Immigration, customs, currency exchange, and ATMs are all available during nighttime arrivals. The e-visa and visa-on-arrival counters operate for all scheduled flights. Expect the usual 20-45 minute wait at immigration, sometimes longer if several long-haul flights arrive simultaneously.

The arrivals hall has limited food options at night. A small cafe may be open, but do not count on it. If you are hungry, bring snacks from the plane or plan to eat at your hotel.

Transport options after dark

Yellow taxis are available outside the terminal 24 hours. However, fewer drivers work the late shift, and you may wait 5-10 minutes for one. Fares are typically 10-20% higher than daytime rates. To Meskel Square, expect ETB 900-1,800 (€7-14) at night.

Ride-hailing apps (Ride, ZayRide) have very limited driver availability after 11 PM. You might find a driver, but wait times of 20+ minutes are common, and getting no response is possible. Do not rely on apps for a 2 AM arrival.

Pre-booked transfers are the most reliable option for late-night arrivals. Your driver monitors your flight and adjusts for delays. The price is fixed regardless of the hour — typically €12-25 for a sedan to the city center. No surge pricing, no negotiation in the dark.

Safety at night

The airport area itself is well-secured. The road from Bole Airport to the city center follows the main Bole Road, which is a wide, paved avenue. Street lighting is inconsistent in some sections but the road is busy enough that isolation is not a concern.

Addis Ababa is generally safer at night than many African capitals, but standard precautions apply. Stick to main roads, keep valuables out of sight, and avoid walking long distances from the airport after dark.

Nearby hotels for late arrivals

If your flight lands between midnight and 4 AM and you would rather rest than travel into the city, the Bole area has multiple hotels within 1-3 km of the airport:

| Hotel tier | Walk/taxi time | Approximate rate | |---|---|---| | Budget guesthouse | 5-10 min taxi | ETB 2,000-4,000 (€15-30) | | Mid-range hotel | 5 min taxi | ETB 5,000-10,000 (€38-75) | | Luxury (Marriott, Radisson) | 5-10 min taxi | ETB 15,000+ (€115+) |

Some hotels offer free airport shuttle service — call ahead to arrange pickup. Ethiopian Airlines also provides free layover hotels for passengers with long connections (typically 8+ hours).

Ethiopian Airlines transit passengers

If you are transiting through ADD with a long overnight layover, Ethiopian Airlines often provides complimentary hotel accommodation and a city tour. Check with the transfer desk inside the terminal before leaving the airport. This can save you the cost and hassle of arranging your own transport and accommodation.
