Taxi vs private transfer from Aberdeen Airport — which is better

Last updated: March 2026

Both options get you from Aberdeen Airport to the city in about the same time. The difference comes down to price, predictability, and what matters to you on arrival.

Side-by-side comparison

| Factor | Taxi from rank | Pre-booked transfer | |---|---|---| | Price to city center | £18-25 (€21-29) | £30-45 (€35-52) | | Pricing model | Metered (varies with traffic) | Fixed price | | Availability | Queue at rank, usually available | Guaranteed — driver waits for you | | Meeting point | Taxi rank outside arrivals | Driver inside arrivals with name sign | | Booking needed | No | Yes, in advance | | Late night reliability | Good until midnight, thins out after | Reliable at any hour | | Child seats | Not provided | Available on request | | Vehicle quality | Standard saloons, generally decent | Newer vehicles, often premium | | Payment | Meter + card or cash | Prepaid or pay on arrival | | Flight delay handling | You take whatever taxi is available | Driver tracks your flight and adjusts |

When a taxi makes more sense

If you are a solo traveler or a couple arriving during normal hours (say 7 AM to 10 PM) with modest luggage, the taxi rank is perfectly fine. Aberdeen Airport taxis are regulated, metered, and the drivers know the city well. You walk out, join a short queue, and you are on your way within minutes. There is no need to plan ahead.

The cost advantage is real — £18-25 versus £30-45 for a sedan transfer. If you are making this trip regularly (many people do, given Aberdeen's oil industry traffic), taxis are the practical daily choice.

When a pre-booked transfer makes more sense

Late arrivals. After midnight, the taxi rank can be empty. A pre-booked driver will be there regardless.

First-time visitors. Having someone meet you with a name sign removes all uncertainty. You do not need to figure out where the taxi rank is or negotiate anything.

Families with children. If you need a child seat, you must arrange it in advance. Taxis do not carry them, and legally they do not have to in the UK. Transfer companies will fit one if you request it at booking.

Groups. A minivan transfer for 5-7 people at £45-70 is cheaper than two taxis.

Heading somewhere remote. If your destination is in Aberdeenshire — Banchory, Ballater, Braemar, or somewhere in the Cairngorms — a pre-booked transfer with a fixed price gives you cost certainty. A metered taxi for a 50+ km journey can produce an uncomfortable surprise on the meter.

Flight delays. Transfer companies monitor your flight. If it lands two hours late, the driver adjusts. At a taxi rank, you just deal with whatever is available when you walk out.

The honest trade-off

Taxis are cheaper and require no planning. Transfers cost more but remove uncertainty. Neither option is objectively better — it depends on your circumstances. For a routine domestic arrival during the day, a taxi is fine. For an international late-night arrival with family and luggage, a transfer is worth the premium.
