ABJ - Abidjan

Getting from Abidjan Airport to the City with Kids

Traveling through ABJ with children requires a bit more planning than a solo trip. The airport is manageable, but the ground transport situation is where families need to think ahead.

Inside the terminal

ABJ's arrivals area is compact. After immigration and luggage collection, you exit into a small hall. There are no dedicated family lanes or fast-track options for travelers with children. Immigration can take 20-45 minutes, so prepare for standing and waiting with tired kids.

There are basic toilet facilities in the terminal. Changing facilities are minimal. If you need to feed or change an infant, do it before exiting the secure area — options in the public arrivals hall are limited.

Luggage trolleys are available inside the terminal. If you have a stroller, it will come through the oversized luggage belt or be delivered at the aircraft door depending on how it was checked.

Child seats

This is the most important consideration. Regular taxis in Abidjan do not carry child seats — not sometimes, essentially never. If your child requires a car seat by age or size, a taxi is not a viable option.

Pre-booked transfer services can sometimes provide child seats, but this must be requested at the time of booking and confirmed before your flight. Availability is not guaranteed, and you should get explicit confirmation. Some families traveling to Abidjan choose to bring their own portable car seat or booster for this reason.

Choosing the right vehicle

With children, luggage volume grows quickly — strollers, car seats, extra bags. A standard sedan may not have enough space. When booking a transfer, specify exactly how many children, their ages, the number of bags, and whether you have a stroller. A minivan or SUV is often the better fit.

Taxis at ABJ range from compact sedans to slightly larger vehicles, but you cannot choose in advance. Getting the whole family plus luggage into a random taxi can be a frustrating puzzle at the curb.

The meeting and loading process

With a pre-booked transfer, the driver waits at the arrivals exit. You can focus on gathering children and bags while the driver handles loading. Some transfer services send driver details (name, photo, phone) via WhatsApp before landing, which adds a layer of reassurance.

With a taxi, you negotiate while managing children and luggage simultaneously. This is stressful in any airport — at ABJ, with touts competing for attention, it is particularly so.

Timing considerations

If possible, avoid arriving during Abidjan rush hours (7-9 AM, 5-8 PM). A ride that takes 30 minutes at a quiet time can stretch to 90 minutes in traffic. For children, that difference matters.

Late-night arrivals with kids are another reason to pre-book. The area around ABJ is not well-lit after dark, and having a driver waiting removes the need to figure things out on the curb.

Practical tips

  • Download your transfer confirmation for offline access — Wi-Fi at ABJ is unreliable.
  • Bring snacks and water for the kids. The ride to central Abidjan can take longer than expected.
  • If your hotel offers a shuttle, ask whether it accommodates child seats.
  • Keep XOF cash on hand for any incidentals, even if your transfer is pre-paid.
The honest advice: if you are traveling with children under 6, book a transfer with a confirmed child seat. The peace of mind is worth far more than the cost difference.
