WDH - Windhoek

How much does it cost to get from Windhoek airport to the city?

Hosea Kutako International Airport is 45 km from central Windhoek, and since there is no public bus, every option involves paying for a vehicle. Here is what you can realistically expect to spend in 2026.

Private transfer

A pre-booked private car from the airport to central Windhoek costs between N$500 and N$800 (USD 28-45). The price depends on the vehicle type and time of day. Larger vehicles like minivans for groups of 4-6 typically run N$800-1,200. The fare is fixed when you book, so there are no surprises at the end of the ride.

Shared shuttle

Shared airport shuttles charge around N$300-400 per person (USD 17-22). The trade-off is waiting time. Shuttles either depart on a schedule or wait until enough passengers board. If your flight arrives when no other international flights are landing, you could wait a while.

Taxi

Taxis outside the terminal charge N$500-700 for the ride to Windhoek. There are no meters, so the price is negotiated. This can work in your favor if you are a confident negotiator, or against you if the driver senses you are unfamiliar with local prices. Always agree on a price before getting in. Cash only, in Namibian dollars or South African rand.

Car rental

Renting a car at WDH starts from N$400-600 per day for a compact vehicle. This only makes sense if you need a car for your stay. Add fuel costs of roughly N$50-70 for the drive to Windhoek. Several agencies operate from the arrivals hall, including Avis, Europcar, and Hertz.

Hidden costs to watch for

Some things that can push your costs up: arriving after hours (some services add a surcharge of N$100-200 for late-night pickups), requesting a child seat (sometimes free, sometimes N$50-100 extra), and paying with foreign currency at an unfavorable exchange rate. The airport exchange booth is convenient but rates are worse than in town.

What we recommend

For a single traveler or couple, a pre-booked private transfer offers the best balance of cost and reliability. For groups of 3 or more, a larger vehicle booking often works out cheaper per person than individual shuttle seats. Taxis are fine for budget-conscious daytime arrivals, but the savings over a pre-booked car are marginal considering the uncertainty.
