Family and Kids Transfer Guide for Bauerfield Airport (VLI)

Arriving at Bauerfield Airport with children is manageable, but a little preparation makes the difference between a smooth start and a stressful one.

The terminal experience with kids

Bauerfield is a small airport with a single terminal. Immigration and baggage claim are in one area, and the whole process is fairly quick. The downside is that the terminal is warm, there is limited seating in the arrivals area, and amenities are basic. If you have young children, plan to move through and outside quickly rather than lingering inside.

Getting to your hotel with a family

The ride to most Port Vila hotels takes 15-20 minutes. With children who have been on a plane for hours, the priority is usually getting to your accommodation as fast as possible. A pre-booked transfer is the path of least resistance. Your driver is waiting, the vehicle is ready, and you are on your way within minutes of exiting the terminal.

Taxis work but come with trade-offs for families. You need to find a vehicle large enough for your luggage, strollers, and car seats (if you bring your own). There is no guarantee the first taxi in the queue will be suitable.

Child seats

Vanuatu does not have strict child seat laws for taxis, and standard taxis will not have them. If your children are young enough to need a car seat, you have two options: bring your own travel seat, or book a private transfer and request one in advance. Most reputable transfer services can provide child seats if given notice.

Luggage and equipment

Families traveling with strollers, beach gear, or diving equipment should specify this when booking a transfer. A standard sedan may not fit everything. Requesting a minivan or larger vehicle in advance costs slightly more but avoids the struggle of cramming bags into a small trunk in the tropical heat.

The road to your resort

The main road from the airport to Port Vila is paved and in reasonable condition. Some secondary roads leading to coastal resorts can be rougher, with potholes or unpaved sections. This is generally manageable but worth knowing if you have a child who gets carsick on bumpy roads.

Practical tips

Have water and snacks accessible for the ride. The terminal does not have much in the way of shops after you clear customs. Keep your transfer booking confirmation on your phone or printed, with the driver's contact number. And if you are arriving in the afternoon heat, a vehicle with working air conditioning is not a luxury, it is a necessity with small children.
