Koh Samui is one of Thailand's top family destinations — resorts with kids' pools, calm beaches, and easy-going island atmosphere. The airport is small and manageable, but the transfer to your hotel requires some thought when children are involved.
The Child Seat Situation
This is the main issue for families. Standard airport taxis at USM do not carry child seats. Thailand's child restraint laws are less strictly enforced than in Europe or North America, but that does not change the safety reality. If your children need car seats or boosters, the only reliable way to get them is through a pre-booked transfer where you specify seat requirements during booking.
Most transfer services offer infant seats, toddler seats, and booster seats. Provide your children's ages and weights when booking so the correct equipment is prepared.
Navigating the Airport with Kids
USM's open-air design is actually pleasant with children. There are no cramped corridors, no escalators to manage with strollers, and the walk from plane to exit is short. The tropical heat hits immediately though — have water ready, especially for small children. The arrivals process is quick, rarely more than 15-20 minutes including baggage.
Vehicle Size for Families
A family of four with typical holiday luggage (two large suitcases, carry-ons, a stroller) needs at minimum a large sedan, ideally an SUV or minivan. Add a car seat or two and space gets tight quickly. If you are traveling with another family or have three or more children, a minivan is not optional — it is necessary.
When pre-booking, be specific about your luggage. Transfer services would rather send the right vehicle than deal with a situation where bags do not fit.
Journey to Family-Friendly Areas
Popular family areas and their approximate transfer times from USM:
- Chaweng Beach: 15-20 minutes, the closest major area
- Bophut / Fisherman's Village: 15 minutes, quieter and family-oriented
- Choeng Mon: 10 minutes, one of the nearest beach areas
- Maenam: 20-25 minutes, relaxed and good for families
- Lamai: 25-30 minutes, slightly further south
Practical Tips for the Transfer
Bring a change of clothes for small children in your carry-on — the heat after landing can be overwhelming. Have your hotel's name and address saved on your phone in case of communication difficulties. If your children are prone to car sickness, note that Samui's roads are winding in parts, particularly heading to the western and southern coasts.
Cost for Family Transfers
A minivan transfer from USM to most beach areas costs 500-900 THB (14-25 USD), which is modest for a family. Adding child seats does not typically increase the price with pre-booked services, but confirm this when booking. The investment in comfort and safety is small relative to the overall cost of a Koh Samui family holiday.
