STX - Christiansted

How Much Does It Cost to Get from STX Airport to Your Hotel

Henry E. Rohlsen Airport is on the southwestern coast of St. Croix, positioned between the island's two main towns. Frederiksted is a short ride to the northwest, while Christiansted is further east. Most resorts are scattered along the north shore and east end.

Shared taxi rates

The Virgin Islands Taxicab Commission sets fixed per-person rates from the airport. In 2026:

  • Frederiksted: $10-$14 per person
  • Mid-island (Estate Whim, Sunny Isle): $12-$16 per person
  • Christiansted: $16-$22 per person
  • North Shore (Cane Bay): $15-$20 per person
  • Buccaneer Resort: $18-$24 per person
  • East End (Divi Carina, Point Udall area): $20-$28 per person
These are per-person rates in shared taxis. Two people pay double. Luggage surcharges of $2-$3 per extra bag (beyond two per person) may apply.

Private transfer rates

Private transfers charge per vehicle, making them more cost-effective for couples and families:

  • Frederiksted: $15-$30
  • Mid-island: $20-$35
  • Christiansted: $25-$50
  • North Shore: $25-$45
  • Buccaneer Resort: $30-$50
  • East End: $35-$55
These prices are for a sedan or standard SUV. Larger vehicles for groups add $10-$20.

The per-person vs per-vehicle math

This is where the decision gets clear. A solo traveler to Christiansted pays $18 in a shared taxi vs $35 for a private transfer. The taxi wins. But a couple pays $36-$44 in shared fares vs the same $35 for a private transfer. And a family of four pays $64-$88 shared vs $35-$50 private. For anyone traveling with a companion, the private transfer is often the same price or cheaper.

Rental car as an alternative

St. Croix is 28 miles long and 7 miles wide. If you are staying for several days and want to explore, a rental car at $50-$80 per day is worth considering. The airport agencies offer pickup right at the terminal. Factor in that you will not need to pay for transfers both ways if you have your own car.

For a one-night resort stay, a transfer makes more sense. For a week-long exploration of the island, rent a car.

Getting between towns

If you stay in Christiansted but want to visit Frederiksted (or vice versa), taxis between the two towns cost $15-$25 per person. Having a rental car eliminates this ongoing cost.

The bottom line

Transport costs on St. Croix are modest compared to larger Caribbean islands. Even the longest ride from the airport, to the East End, costs under $55 by private transfer. For the most common trip to Christiansted, budget $25-$50 for a private vehicle that takes you directly to your hotel door.
