Siem Reap Airport Transfers for Families with Children

Cambodia is a wonderful destination for families, and Siem Reap is one of the easier places in Southeast Asia to navigate with kids. Getting from the airport to your hotel just requires a little forethought.

The Tuk-Tuk Question

Every child will want to ride a tuk-tuk — and they should, at some point during your trip. But the airport transfer is not the ideal time. After a flight, with luggage, tired kids, and possibly jet lag, an open-air vehicle with no seatbelts on a busy road is not the best first experience.

Tuk-tuks have no child restraints, no doors, and limited space for bags. A family of four with two suitcases physically will not fit comfortably. Save the tuk-tuk for a short trip around town when you are settled and traveling light.

Child Safety in Vehicles

Cambodia does not enforce child car seat laws the way Western countries do, and you will not find child seats in standard taxis or ride-hailing vehicles. If child seats matter to you — and they should for young children — a pre-booked transfer is your only realistic option. Request the appropriate seats when booking and confirm they will be provided.

For children over 5 or 6, a regular seatbelt in an air-conditioned car is a reasonable compromise.

The Airport Experience with Kids

Siem Reap's terminal is modern and manageable. Immigration can take 20-40 minutes, which tests the patience of small children. If getting a visa on arrival, bring the passport photos and cash ready to go — minimizing time in the queue helps.

The arrivals area has basic facilities: restrooms, a small shop for water and snacks, and air conditioning. It is not a large airport, so you will not be walking long distances to reach your transport.

Luggage Logistics

Families always pack more than they think. A stroller, a car seat brought from home, the extra bag of kid supplies — it needs to fit somewhere. Standard sedans can usually handle a family of four with two large suitcases, but add a stroller and it gets tight.

Request a minivan or SUV when booking your transfer if you have significant luggage. The additional cost is typically $3-5 and saves the stress of playing luggage Tetris on arrival.

Heat and Hydration

Siem Reap is hot year-round, with temperatures regularly exceeding 35 degrees Celsius. The walk from the terminal to a tuk-tuk or taxi stand, even if short, can be draining for children. An air-conditioned vehicle waiting at the door makes a meaningful difference to everyone's comfort.

Bring water bottles for the kids and refill them before leaving the terminal. The drive to town is short, but dehydrated, cranky children make everything harder.

Our Recommendation

Book a private car transfer with child seats if your children are under 6. For families with older kids, any air-conditioned vehicle will do. The cost difference is negligible — $8-15 for a smooth, safe ride versus the stress of negotiating a tuk-tuk that cannot comfortably fit your family. Your first tuk-tuk ride as a family should be a fun adventure in town, not a logistical challenge at the airport.
