PDX - Portland

How Much Does It Cost to Get from PDX Airport to Portland?

The cost of getting from Portland International Airport to the city depends on your transport method and destination. Here is what to realistically expect in 2026.

MAX Light Rail

The Red Line from PDX to downtown costs $2.80 for a 2.5-hour pass. You buy tickets from machines on the platform before boarding. This is the cheapest option by a wide margin and works well for solo travelers or couples with manageable luggage.

Rideshare fares

Uber and Lyft rides from PDX to downtown Portland typically cost $25 to $45. Prices depend on demand — surge pricing during rush hours, late nights on weekends, and holiday periods can push fares above $50. Early afternoon on a weekday is usually the cheapest window. Pickup is from the designated area in the parking garage, not curbside.

Taxi fares

Portland taxis are metered. A ride to downtown runs approximately $35 to $50, with the fare depending on traffic and exact destination. There is no negotiation involved — the meter sets the price. Tips of 15-20% are customary in the US.

Pre-booked private transfers

Private transfers from PDX cost $55 to $85 for a sedan to downtown, with larger vehicles (SUVs, minivans) in the $75 to $120 range. The price is locked in at booking and does not change based on traffic or time of day. This eliminates surge pricing risk and includes meet-and-greet service.

What affects the price

Destination: Downtown Portland is the baseline. The Pearl District and Lloyd District are similar. Lake Oswego, Beaverton, and Hillsboro cost 20-40% more due to distance. Vancouver, WA adds a bridge crossing.

Time of day: Rideshare surge pricing peaks during weekday rush hours (7-9 AM, 4-6 PM) and late weekend nights. Taxis and pre-booked transfers are unaffected by demand.

Traffic: Rush hour can nearly double travel time on I-205 and I-84. This does not change pre-booked transfer prices, but metered taxis cost more when the ride takes longer.

Group size: Splitting a rideshare or taxi among 2-3 people brings the per-person cost close to the MAX fare, with much more convenience.

Tipping

Tipping is expected for taxis (15-20% of the fare), rideshare (optional, $2-5 is common), and private transfer drivers ($5-10 or 15-20% is appropriate). The MAX requires no tip.

Bottom line

Budget $3 if you are fine with the train, $25-$50 for rideshare or taxi, or $55-$85 for a private transfer. Portland is one of the more affordable US cities for airport transport, and the MAX gives you a genuinely useful public transit option that most cities lack.
