How Much Does It Cost to Get from Luanda Airport to the City?

Luanda airport is only about 4 km from the city center, making it one of the shortest airport-to-city distances anywhere. But distance and cost do not always correlate in Luanda.

Pricing breakdown (2026)

Angola uses the kwanza (AOA). Exchange rates fluctuate — as of 2026, roughly 800-900 AOA per 1 USD, but always check current rates.

Informal taxi: 3,000-8,000 AOA (roughly 4-10 USD). The range is wide because prices are negotiated, not metered. Your fare depends on your negotiating skills, your Portuguese, and what the driver thinks you will pay. First-time visitors consistently pay more.

Yango (ride-hailing app): 2,000-6,000 AOA (3-8 USD) for the airport-to-center trip. The app gives you an upfront estimate, which removes the negotiation. During peak traffic, prices may increase slightly. Payment can be cash or card.

Pre-booked transfer (sedan): 25-45 USD. This includes meet-and-greet inside the terminal and a quality vehicle.

Pre-booked transfer (SUV): 40-60 USD. Recommended for comfort and luggage space, especially on Luanda's roads.

To outlying areas: Talatona, Viana, or Belas — expect 40-80 USD for transfers, or roughly 8,000-15,000 AOA for taxis.

The traffic factor

The actual cost of getting from the airport into Luanda is often measured in time, not money. During rush hours (07:00-10:00 and 16:00-20:00), a 4 km trip can take over an hour. This does not change fixed transfer prices, but metered or time-based Yango fares may increase.

If you have a connecting appointment or meeting, traffic is the real expense. Factor in the time cost, not just the cash cost.

Currency and payment tips

Bring USD in good condition (no tears, post-2006 series preferred). You can exchange at the airport, though rates are not favorable. ATMs are available but can be unreliable. Major hotels accept USD directly.

For taxis, you need kwanza in cash. Yango accepts card payment through the app. Pre-booked transfers are typically paid in advance in USD or EUR.

The real cost picture

The ride itself is cheap relative to what you will spend on everything else in Luanda. Hotels, food, and services in Luanda are among the most expensive in Africa. The 25-45 USD for a pre-booked transfer is a fraction of a single night at a decent hotel. For most visitors, the certainty and comfort of a pre-booked transfer is the practical choice — the savings from negotiating a taxi are real but small in the context of a Luanda trip.
