Innsbruck Airport is small and fast, which is exactly what you want when traveling with children. The challenge is not the airport but getting everyone and everything to your resort.
Inside the airport
INN has one terminal. From the gate to baggage claim is a 5-minute walk. There are basic baby changing facilities in the restrooms. The arrivals hall is compact, so you will not lose anyone. Free luggage trolleys are available.
Baggage reclaim is fast, usually 10-15 minutes. The whole process from landing to standing outside takes about 20 minutes, even with children.
Transport options for families
| Option | Family-friendly? | Why | |--------|-------------------|-----| | Bus F | OK for city only | Not practical with strollers and ski gear | | Taxi | OK for city | Standard sedan, limited luggage space | | Private transfer (sedan) | Good for city | Car seat available, comfortable | | Private transfer (van) | Best for resorts | Fits ski gear, stroller, car seats, all bags | | Rental car (SUV) | Good | Flexibility, but mountain driving in winter |
Car seat rules in Austria
Austrian law is strict: children under 14 years old or shorter than 150 cm must use an appropriate car seat or booster. This applies to all vehicles including taxis. The fines for non-compliance are significant.
Taxi drivers at INN rarely carry car seats. If your children need them, your options are:
- Bring your own travel car seat
- Book a private transfer and request car seats at booking
- Rent a car seat from the rental car company
The ski family challenge
A typical ski family of four brings: 4 suitcases, 4 ski bags (or snowboard bags), 4 boot bags, possibly a stroller, and carry-on bags. That is an enormous volume of luggage that will not fit in a sedan or standard taxi.
A van or minibus transfer is the only realistic option. The driver loads everything into a vehicle designed for this purpose. Many transfer services operating from INN specialize in ski transfers and have roof boxes or trailers for extra equipment.
Practical tips
- Book your transfer before you fly. Ski season weekends (Saturday arrivals) are busy at INN. Vehicles sell out.
- Specify car seat needs when booking. Include each child's age and weight.
- Dress kids in layers. The airport is warm, the car is warm, but the walk between can be cold in winter.
- Snacks and water. If heading to a resort 45-90 minutes away, kids will need something for the road.
- Check if your hotel offers a shuttle. Many ski hotels include airport pickup, especially for week-long bookings.
