Late Night Arrivals at Guam Airport (GUM)

Guam's airport handles a significant number of late-night and early-morning arrivals. Flights from Tokyo, Osaka, Seoul, Manila, and other Asian cities frequently land between 10 PM and 3 AM. If you are on one of these flights, here is what to expect.

The airport at night

GUM is accustomed to late arrivals. The terminal stays operational for scheduled flights, immigration desks are staffed, and baggage claim functions as normal. The arrivals area may feel quieter than during the day, but it is not shut down.

After clearing customs, you exit to the same ground-level pickup area. At night it is less crowded, which actually makes finding your transport easier.

Taxi availability

Taxis are generally available for the main wave of late-night Asian flights. Drivers know the flight schedules and position themselves accordingly. For the 10 PM to midnight window, you should find taxis waiting.

After midnight, availability becomes less certain. If your flight lands at 1 or 2 AM — or if a delayed flight pushes you well past midnight — the taxi line may be thin or empty. This is when pre-booking pays off.

The metered fare to Tumon is the same at night as during the day. There is no official night surcharge on Guam taxis.

Hotel shuttles at night

Some hotel shuttles run for late Asian flight arrivals since these are the bread and butter of Guam tourism. Your hotel may send a shuttle for the 10-11 PM wave of flights. For very late or delayed arrivals, shuttle service becomes less likely. Confirm with your hotel whether their shuttle covers your specific flight time.

Pre-booked transfers

For arrivals after midnight, a pre-booked transfer is the most reliable option. The driver tracks your flight and adjusts for delays. You walk out and your ride is there. The cost is 25-45 USD to Tumon — a small price for certainty at 2 AM.

This is particularly relevant for families or groups. Waiting at the taxi rank at 1 AM with children and luggage, hoping enough taxis show up to fit everyone, is not a situation you want to be in.

The drive at night

Marine Corps Drive — the main route from the airport to Tumon — is well-lit and straightforward. There is almost no traffic late at night, so the drive is quick: 7-10 minutes. Guam is safe, and the hotel strip in Tumon is active even late, with restaurants and convenience stores open.

What is not available late

  • Car rental counters may be closed after the last flight wave. If you planned to pick up a rental car, confirm the counter hours with your agency.
  • Airport food outlets close when passenger flow stops.
  • Currency exchange may not be staffed, but ATMs work around the clock.

Practical tips

  • Pre-book if your flight lands after midnight. Taxis are uncertain at that hour.
  • If your hotel offers a shuttle for your flight time, confirm the details and have the hotel's phone number handy.
  • Guam is a US territory — your US phone plan may work here, which helps with coordination.
  • The heat does not let up at night. Guam is warm and humid 24 hours a day. Dress accordingly.
  • Check-in at Tumon hotels is generally flexible for late-night arrivals from known flight schedules. Let them know in advance.
Late-night arrivals are standard at GUM, not an exception. The airport and the local transport system are built around the Asian flight schedule. With a small amount of planning — confirming your hotel shuttle or booking a transfer — the late arrival is painless.
