Several long-haul flights into Entebbe land between 10 PM and 2 AM. The airport stays open and staffed, but the experience is different from daytime arrivals.
What changes after dark
Immigration and baggage claim operate as normal regardless of the hour. The main difference is outside. The taxi area thins out considerably after midnight. Fewer drivers means less competition, and those who remain know they have leverage. Currency exchange counters may be closed, but the ATM usually works.
Your transport options narrow
During the day, you can take your time negotiating with taxi drivers or attempt a ride-hailing app. At night, your realistic options shrink to two: a pre-booked transfer or whatever taxi driver is still waiting. Ride-hailing apps are especially unreliable late at night in the Entebbe area.
The upside of a late arrival is the drive itself. Kampala traffic disappears after 9 PM, and the 40 km journey takes about 40 minutes on a quiet road. During the day, the same trip can take two hours.
Safety considerations
The Entebbe-Kampala highway is a well-traveled route but poorly lit in sections. Driving with someone you do not know, in a vehicle you have not vetted, on an unfamiliar road at 1 AM is an avoidable risk. Pre-arranged transfers typically use vetted drivers and tracked vehicles.
The practical recommendation
If you already know your flight lands late, book transport before you leave home. Share your flight details so the driver can adjust for delays. Most transfer services include flight monitoring and will not charge extra if your plane is late. When you walk out of arrivals at midnight with heavy bags and jet lag, seeing someone holding your name is worth whatever small premium you paid.
If you did not pre-book
You will not be stranded. There are almost always a few taxis waiting, even at 2 AM. Agree on a price firmly before getting in. Expect to pay $50-70 USD to Kampala, which is more than daytime rates. Make sure your phone is charged and share your location with someone if possible.
Accommodation near the airport
If your onward journey is not to Kampala, consider staying near Entebbe for the night and traveling in daylight. There are several hotels within 10-15 minutes of the airport in various price ranges. This is especially sensible if your final destination is more than two hours away.
