Arriving at Reagan Airport Late at Night – What Are Your Options?

Last updated: March 2026

Reagan National Airport's last flights typically arrive by 10–11 PM, with occasional delays pushing into midnight. Your transport options narrow after dark, primarily because the Metro has a closing time. Here is what to expect.

Metro closing times

The Washington Metro runs until:

| Day | Last train from DCA | |-----|--------------------| | Sunday–Thursday | Around 11:30 PM (service ends midnight) | | Friday–Saturday | Around 12:30 AM (service ends 1 AM) |

If your flight lands before these times and you clear baggage quickly, the Metro remains your cheapest option at $2.50–$6.00 (EUR 2.30–5.50). Check the WMATA website or app for real-time schedules — last trains can vary.

If you miss the last train, you are looking at a taxi, rideshare, or pre-booked transfer.

Taxi availability after hours

The taxi stand at DCA is well-served even late at night. Most travelers report wait times under 10 minutes after 10 PM. Fares are the same as daytime — DC taxis do not add a night surcharge. A ride to downtown costs $15–$25 (EUR 14–23) plus tip.

The taxi line is outside the baggage claim at each terminal. Even after midnight, there are usually vehicles available, though the line may thin out past 1 AM.

Rideshare late at night

Uber and Lyft operate at DCA after dark. Wait times are slightly longer after 11 PM — expect 5–15 minutes for a match. Surge pricing is uncommon late at night (unlike rush hour), so fares are often at or below daytime rates. A typical ride to downtown is $12–$22 (EUR 11–20).

Pre-booked transfers

A private transfer is the zero-uncertainty option for late-night arrivals. Your driver tracks your flight, adjusts for delays, and is waiting when you walk out. Cost is $45–$60 (EUR 41–55) to downtown DC — more expensive, but guaranteed.

This is most valuable when your flight is prone to delays. If you land at 11:45 PM and miss the Metro, having a confirmed driver waiting is worth the premium.

Safety and environment

DCA and the surrounding area (Crystal City/Arlington) are safe at night. The airport is well-lit, security is present, and the taxi/rideshare area is monitored. There are no significant safety concerns for late-night arrivals.

One thing to note: food options inside the terminal close by 9–10 PM. If you are hungry after a late landing, plan to eat at your hotel or pick something up en route.
