Cleveland Airport with Kids and Family — Practical Transport Guide

Last updated: March 2026

Cleveland Hopkins is a manageable, mid-sized airport that does not overwhelm families. The terminal is compact, signage is clear, and ground transportation options are straightforward. Here is what you need to know when traveling with children.

Car seat requirements in Ohio

Ohio law is specific about child restraints:

  • Under 4 years old or under 40 lbs: must be in a child safety seat
  • 4-7 years old (under 4'9" tall): must use a booster seat
  • 8 and older (or over 4'9"): regular seat belt
These rules apply to all vehicles, including taxis and rideshares. The practical problem: taxis and Uber/Lyft do not provide car seats in Cleveland. You have three options:

1. Bring your own car seat (airlines check them free) 2. Book a private transfer with a car seat requested in advance 3. Install your own seat in the rideshare vehicle (drivers may be impatient)

Transport options for families

| Option | Car seat | Luggage | Kid-friendliness | |--------|----------|---------|-------------------| | Taxi | Not provided | 2-3 bags | Fine for short ride | | Uber/Lyft | Not provided | 2-3 bags | Fine for short ride | | UberXL/Lyft XL | Not provided | 4-5 bags | More space | | Private transfer | Available on request | Flexible | Best for families | | RTA Red Line | N/A | Limited | Challenging with small kids | | Rental car | Rentable at desk | Unlimited | Best for extended stays |

RTA Red Line with kids

The Red Line is possible with older children who can manage themselves. With toddlers, strollers, and multiple suitcases, it becomes a juggling act. The platform can be cold and windy in winter, trains do not have designated luggage space, and you still need to get from Tower City to your hotel. For families, a car-based option is more practical.

Strollers and luggage logistics

Baggage claim at CLE is on the lower level. Free luggage carts are available. From baggage claim to the taxi stand is a short walk through automatic doors. For rideshare, you need to go up to the departures level — there are elevators, but managing a stroller, suitcases, and children through an elevator can test your patience.

For transfers, the driver comes to you at baggage claim, which eliminates the luggage shuffle entirely.

Cleveland Clinic family travel

Many families travel to Cleveland specifically for Cleveland Clinic appointments. If you are visiting for medical reasons with a child, the stress of navigating ground transportation is the last thing you need. A pre-booked transfer to the Clinic campus (about $55-75 / EUR 50-69) with a car seat and space for medical equipment is a worthwhile investment.

Winter travel with kids

Cleveland winters are serious — snow, ice, and wind chill below -10C are normal from December through February. If arriving in winter with small children:

  • Have warm coats accessible, not packed in checked luggage
  • A transfer or taxi is much better than waiting for a rideshare or standing on the RTA platform
  • Budget extra time for everything — roads may be slow
  • Some rental car companies provide winter tires; ask when booking
