Cost of getting from Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport to the city

Metro Line 3: runs from the airport to central areas including Tianhe, the main business district, taking about 45-55 minutes to Tianhe Coach Terminal or Zhujiang New Town, roughly 6:30 AM to 10:30-11 PM. Airport bus: fares depend on the route. Slow but inexpensive — check the board at the bus bay for the current fare.

Taxi: Taxis are metered on the Guangzhou city tariff — CNY 12 to start (covering the first 3 km) plus CNY 2.6 per km after that, with a CNY 44 per hour charge while the car is crawling below 10 km/h (Guangzhou Transport Bureau, in force since December 2024). Trips over 25 km also carry a 50 percent empty-return surcharge on the per-km portion, and a 30 percent night surcharge applies to that portion between 23:00 and 05:00. For the roughly 28 km into Tianhe that works out to about CNY 110-160 once time in traffic is counted. The tariff is a government-guided price that can float by up to 30 percent at peak hours and is revised periodically, so check the rate card displayed in the car.

Pre-booked transfer: a fixed price per vehicle, agreed when you book, so it does not move with the meter or the traffic.

By destination

There is no fixed per-district price list: every taxi journey is charged on the same meter, so what you pay is set by distance and by time spent in traffic. The two step-changes worth knowing are the empty-return surcharge on the per-km portion, which starts at 15 km (20 percent) and rises at 25 km (50 percent) — so Panyu or Guangzhou South cost proportionally more than the distance alone suggests. Pre-booked transfers are priced per vehicle for your specific destination and confirmed at booking.

Hidden costs to consider

• Night surcharge: between 23:00 and 05:00 the meter adds 30 percent to the per-km portion of the fare.
• Traffic factor: the meter runs on both time and distance (CNY 44 per hour below 10 km/h), and the government-guided tariff may float upward by up to 30 percent at peak hours.
• Language confusion: If a taxi driver misunderstands your destination, the detour costs you money on the meter. Having your address in Chinese reduces this risk.
• Payment friction: Without WeChat Pay or Alipay, you are limited to cash. ATMs are available in arrivals.

Tips for managing costs

• The metro is by far the cheapest option at roughly CNY 7-8, but factor in walking and possible transfers to your final destination.
