Arriving late at night at Atlanta Airport

Last updated: February 2026

Atlanta Airport handles domestic red-eye flights and late international arrivals. If your flight lands between 10 PM and 6 AM, here is what the experience looks like.

MARTA hours

MARTA trains run until approximately 1 AM on weekdays and 1:30 AM on weekends. The last airport departure is around that time. Morning service resumes at approximately 4:45 AM on weekdays and 6 AM on weekends.

If your flight lands before midnight, you likely have time to clear baggage and catch a train. But if immigration (for international flights) takes 30-45 minutes, the math gets tight. Do not count on MARTA for flights arriving after 11 PM unless you are on a domestic flight with no checked bags.

Taxis after midnight

The taxi queue operates 24 hours. Even at 2 AM, there are usually taxis available, though the queue may be shorter than during the day. The flat rate to downtown remains USD 35. Dispatchers are present to manage the line.

Taxis are the most straightforward option when MARTA is not running. No app needed, no waiting for a driver to accept, just get in and go.

Rideshares after midnight

Uber and Lyft operate overnight, but driver supply drops significantly between 1 and 5 AM. Wait times of 15-25 minutes are common. Surge pricing often applies, meaning a ride that costs USD 25 at 6 PM might cost USD 40-55 at 2 AM.

The rideshare pickup area is on the ground level. It can feel deserted late at night, though the area has lighting and is monitored.

Pre-booked transfers

A pre-booked transfer operates the same at 3 AM as at 3 PM. Your driver tracks the flight, meets you at baggage claim, and drives you to your destination. The price is set at booking with no late-night surcharge from most providers.

For international arrivals clearing customs at odd hours, a transfer driver who waits regardless of delays is particularly valuable.

The terminal overnight

Atlanta Airport does not officially encourage overnight stays, but people do sleep in the terminal during long layovers. The domestic terminal has some seating but is not comfortable for extended rest. Most food outlets close by 10-11 PM. A few may stay open later but selection is minimal.

The airport has free Wi-Fi throughout. Restrooms are open 24 hours. The overall atmosphere after midnight is quiet on the landside (past security) and mostly empty.

Hotels near the airport

Several hotels are within a few minutes of the airport, many offering shuttles. If you arrive very late and have an early morning obligation, staying near the airport and heading into the city the next day can be practical. The Renaissance Atlanta Airport Hotel is connected to the terminal.

Safety considerations

The airport itself is safe at all hours with active security presence. The surrounding area (College Park) is not particularly walkable or tourist-friendly at night. Do not leave the terminal on foot looking for cheaper transport. Use the designated taxi rank, rideshare area, or your pre-booked transfer.

Practical advice

  • Check MARTA's last train time for your specific day (weekday vs weekend schedules differ).
  • If your international flight is scheduled to land after 10 PM, have a non-MARTA plan ready.
  • Keep phone charged for rideshare apps. Power outlets are available throughout the terminal.
  • If you are connecting to a domestic flight the next morning, allow time to get from the hotel back through security. Atlanta Airport security lines can be long.
