ACK - Nantucket

Arriving Late at Nantucket Airport

Nantucket Memorial Airport is not a late-night operation. Understanding the airport's limited evening schedule is key to planning your arrival.

Flight schedule reality

Most commercial flights to ACK arrive before 8-9 PM, even in peak summer. Cape Air, JetBlue, and United schedule their last flights to land before dark when possible. In the off-season, the last flights often arrive by late afternoon.

Private and charter flights have more flexibility, but the airport does not have 24-hour operations. If you are arriving by private plane, coordinate with your FBO regarding operating hours.

What happens in the evening

After the last scheduled flights arrive, the terminal closes. There is no overnight lounge, no 24-hour services, and no reason to be at the airport after operations end. The area around the airport is residential and quiet — there are no nearby restaurants, hotels, or services within walking distance.

Transport after dark

Taxi availability drops sharply after the last flights. If you are on the final flight of the day and it is delayed, finding a taxi becomes uncertain. The NRTA shuttle does not run in the evening.

This is the one scenario where a pre-booked transfer makes an unambiguous difference. A reserved driver will wait for your specific flight, even if it is delayed. Without a booking, you may be calling taxi companies from the curb and hoping someone is available.

Delayed flights

Delays to Nantucket flights are not uncommon, especially in summer when fog can disrupt schedules. Cape Air flights from Hyannis or Boston sometimes arrive later than planned. If your flight is significantly delayed:

  • Contact your transfer service or taxi to update them.
  • If the flight is cancelled (fog cancellations happen), the airline typically rebooks you on the next available flight, which may be the following morning.
  • Having your accommodation's phone number handy is important — they may need to adjust check-in plans.

If you are stuck

If your flight is cancelled and you are stranded on the mainland (usually Hyannis or Boston), you will need to find accommodation there and fly the next day. If you somehow end up at ACK with no transport, your options are limited: call your accommodation (many will help), call a taxi company directly, or in a true pinch, walk to the nearest area with services (about 20-25 minutes to the edge of town).

Planning ahead

For Nantucket, the best approach is simple: do not plan to arrive late. Book a flight that lands with daylight to spare. If your schedule requires a later arrival, pre-book your ground transport so that one variable is handled. The island has a finite number of taxis and drivers, and at night, that finite number approaches zero.

Off-season evenings

From October through May, the island is quiet. Fewer flights, fewer taxis, earlier sunset. An arrival even at 5 or 6 PM in winter feels late. Pre-booking is even more important in the off-season for any flight arriving after mid-afternoon.
